Orion's real path around the Moon, drawn in the Moon's own frame. The dashed line traces the ground directly below the crew. Each diamond marks where Orion was overhead when a photo was taken. Drag to turn the Moon.
Each point is one photograph NASA has catalogued from Artemis II, in frame order along three arms. Hover to see it; click to open it.
Ride Orion's real path around the Moon and back. Every photograph appears where and when the crew took it, from liftoff to Earthset to splashdown.
Artemis II launched on April 1, 2026 at 6:35 p.m. EDT with NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. Over ten days Orion flew around the far side of the Moon and back to a splashdown in the Pacific off San Diego. Free Return places the crew's photographs where and when they were taken, on Orion's path rebuilt from the position NASA logged with every photo: closest approach 6,546 km above the far side, and 252,754 miles from Earth, farther than any humans have traveled.

NASA's Gateway to Astronaut Photography logs, for every Artemis II photo, the time, camera, lens, and Orion's altitude above the point directly below it. Those records were turned into 3D positions, and a coasting path under Earth, Moon and Sun gravity was fitted through them. The photos sit on that path at the moment they were taken.

Earth and Moon surfaces: NASA/USGS-derived global maps. Stars: a real catalogue of 5,044 stars to magnitude 6, placed at their true positions. The Moon is oriented with the IAU rotation model, so the far side faces Orion at the right moment.
